National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is situated within the traditional territories of the Nisga’a, Gitxsan, Wet’suwet’en, Haisla, Ts’msyen, Heiltsuk and Tahltan Nations. Our staff and Board of Directors are grateful to live and work in this region, and the opportunities we have to collaborate with our neighbouring First Nations communities.

One area of the RDKS Strategic Plan is Governance and Partnerships with First Nations, with the directives to advance First Nations governance and participation opportunities with RDKS, and to understand and fulfill local government responsibilities and opportunities to advance reconciliation with First Nations.

While those who implemented colonial institutions are long gone, we all still live with the impact of those decisions. The RDKS is committed to listening, learning, and taking steps towards better relationships and partnerships with the First Nations on whose traditional territories we live and work.

Orange Shirt Day, also known as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is a day to honour the strength, dignity, and advocacy of Residential School survivors and also intergenerational survivors. It's a chance to learn the history of colonialism in BC, and to remember the children who never came home.
